How do you make money selling candles? J and Dawn 9: I've bought all my supplies and have calculated just how much product I can make. I've been looking at other Etsy stores to see how much they sell items for. If I stay competitive and offer the same prices I'm only making a dollar or two after the materials.

I've noticed that wax melts offer even less markup. I'm just wondering if this is normal. I did look around extensively for the best priced materials, but maybe I didn't find the best deals. If it's not out of line, who do you buy your wholesale supplies from? Shubert from GrayWolfGallery It's unlikely that your competitors are going to give you the info on where they buy their wholesale supplies.

You might try researching through Google for wholesalers. Lisa from UniquelyOdd Plus, it depends on how large of order they are placing. The larger the order, the bigger the discount. Also, some people don't understand about pricing, and might be under-pricing themselves.

B from RenaissanceBotanical I thought about candles but when doing the math, even with wholesale prices, I couldn't do them and make a decent profit after etsy fee, payment fee, listing fee, paper, ink, packaging, taxes etc. I wish it were possible for me as I do love candles. Kathy K from KKbraceletsandmore Some people might only be doing this as a hobby, and really only care about covering the cost of materials.

They don't factor in their time, overhead, packaging, advertising, Etsy and payment processor fees, etc. Elle from ChaseAndScoutDesign I think a lot of people who are new to selling handmade look at what other people are asking and then, subtract a few dollars in order to be "competitive". Others intentionally underprice with the plan of charging more once they're established. Unfortunately this only creates a race to the bottom with few sellers making a true living.

Aim to make a living from the beginning. J and Dawn 1: Elizabeth Reed from FairyFlowerDreams I have no idea if this would work with candles, but I hit Michael's clearance really hard as flowers go out of season. If I buy my supplies at 80 percent off, it is much easier to make a profit. Jen from knjStudio I always love a good sale! Lois from SoigneeInCrochet I do hope you've done extensive research and development, and a lot of testing of your candles before offering them for sale.

Unfortunately a move forced me to abandon my business. Don't buy your supplies from Michael's or JoAnn's. Buy from a candle supply wholesaler.

Deborah from TinTeddy 5: Presumably one really needs insurance for this type of product too, which needs to be taken into account in the maths. Virginia Thompson from HotOffHerHook It's not easy, especially when you consider your shipping quotes usually have to be kind of high, due to the weight, etc.

So, yes, I'd shop around to get the best wholesale prices you can to keep your materials cost down, to allow more profit room. No9DowningStreet from No9DowningStreet Whenever determining what to sell you need to take all costs into consideration including all fees, packaging and shipping materials, and materials to create each item.

If there is not enough profit on top of those costs when setting a competitive selling price then it's not a good choice to sell it. Buying in large quantity will lower your costs per item. Research wholesale suppliers for everything including your boxes and packaging materials. Be sure to test and re-test any candles prior to selling them. Take into consideration the cost of any equipment you need to purchase to produce the item.

After all that determine if this or any product is one you wish to sell. Jennifer V from CreativeJenV I don't think it matters what you are making the process is the same.

Supplies need to be bought at wholesale and in bulk. You need to streamline your process to make your items. It used to take me 2 hours to make a purse when I first started, now I can make one in about an hour.

Then you need to price to sell wholesale and retail. Especially if you want to make a living doing your craft. Are you sure you want to stop following this person?
