Certified registered nurse anesthetists provide anesthesia for millions of surgical procedures each year, working with or without a doctor's supervision. Their salaries are among the highest in nursing, and are even comparable to those of some doctors.

How to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)

The Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't track salary data for nurse anesthetists separately from other registered nurses, but a number of other industry bodies do. Although the figures vary, all are well in excess of what other registered nurses earn.

Other advanced practice nurses earn incomes well into this upper range, though lower than nurse anesthetists.

Nurse anesthetists operate with a degree of independence few non-physician health-care providers can boast. They're permitted to practice without physician supervision in many states, and can bill Medicare directly for their services. Their salaries are comparable to those of physicians in many primary-care specialties. In a special issue, "Modern Healthcare" magazine reviewed 16 major physician salary surveys.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that demand for registered nurses will increase by 26 percent between and , faster than the average for all occupations. The bureau notes that advanced practice nurses, including nurse anesthetists, will be in especially high demand. Smaller centers such as outpatient clinics and phsyicians' offices increasingly perform surgeries, increasing the demand for anesthesia services. Mark Koch, CEO of Somnia Anesthesia, told "Becker's Hospital Review" in a interview that a shortage of anesthesiologists was increasing competition for nurse anesthetists' services.

Nurse anesthetists are especially important in rural and medically underserved areas where anesthesiologists can be difficult to recruit. Fred Decker is a trained chef and certified food-safety trainer.

Decker wrote for the Saint John, New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal, and has been published in Canada's Hospitality and Foodservice magazine. He's held positions selling computers, insurance and mutual funds, and was educated at Memorial University of Newfoundland and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
